As we count down to the Queensland Children’s Hospital’s 10th birthday on 29 November, we’re celebrating the incredible stories of young patients who have been a part of this journey.

Havana Leayr is one of them – a story of courage, resilience and hope.

A startling diagnosis

Diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis shortly after birth, Havana underwent her first of many heart procedures at just four months old.

Over the past 10 years, Havana has become a regular at Queensland Children’s Hospital. She has undergone four heart surgeries – including two open-heart procedures.

Her most recent surgery in 2019 was a battle for survival that saw her on life support after severe complications.

There were moments when her family feared that they may lose her, but Havana’s spirit shone through. After five weeks in intensive care, she fought her way back home.

Ten years on, Havana has transformed from a heart patient to a beacon of hope, using her own personal experiences to give back and make a difference for others.

The impact of Children’s Hospital Foundation

Throughout Havana’s journey, the Children’s Hospital Foundation has been a pillar of support. Programs like Kidzone, bedside play volunteers, and therapy dogs became a lifeline for Havana and her family during long hospital stays.

The Foundation’s support extended beyond Havana, offering her younger brother a safe space within the hospital – offering moments of fun and joy amidst the chaos of hospital life.

“I don’t think we could have gotten through our time without the Foundation staff and volunteers,” recalls mum, Jamie.

“They helped not only us, but our children in what was the hardest time of our lives. Just a simple smile or asking if they could help with anything meant the world.”

From patient to philanthropist

Now 14, Havana is thriving in ways her family once only dreamed of. Thanks to the donor valve she received, her check-ups have gone from every three months to just once a year.

She can now enjoy activities like playing tag with her friends, participating in sport lessons, dancing, and singing her heart out at concerts. canv

But Havana’s biggest achievement goes beyond her health.

Inspired by the support she received, she launched “Spreading Smiles by Havana” – a charity initiative that sees her collect recyclable bottles and cans to raise funds.

Havana’s efforts have raised nearly $6,000, which she has donated to the charities like the Children’s Hospital Foundation that played a vital role in her journey at Queensland Children’s Hospital – giving back to kids just like her.
