Where we came from

In the 1800s, Queensland was no place for a child to live. There was no paediatric hospital, and little ones under five were not allowed admission to the general hospital.

The determination of one person, Mrs Mary McConnel, inspired a community to raise the bar in the care of kids with all illnesses, injuries and conditions. With the support of local business and a devoted committee, the first paediatric hospital in Brisbane opened in 1878. In the first year alone, 105 children were admitted.

Generosity has remained at the heart of the hospital since its inception, and since 1985 the Children’s Hospital Foundation has operated on the ground, in the wards, waiting rooms and research centres, to be the difference every kid deserves.

Who we are now

We exist for every kid that ever needs us, no matter who, where or when. All illnesses, injuries and conditions - today, tomorrow and for every future generation.

We stand with the parents, families, friends and loved ones - those dealing with the most difficult situations in the toughest of times.

We represent the people and communities of Queensland - from different towns, cities, backgrounds and cultures.

We’re fighting for impact that can be felt across the world, raising the bar at a global level by funding knowledge, discoveries, ideas and innovations.

We work as a team - bringing together those with the ambitions and aspirations to be the difference every kid deserves.

We are one, we are Children’s Hospital Foundation.
