National Families Week was nothing short of magical – filled with joy, laughter, and unforgettable memories for young patients and their families.

From furry friends to movie magic, the week was jam-packed with activities that provided patients and their families a much-needed break from their usual hospital routine.

Smiles were spread far and wide across Queensland Children’s Hospital with petting zoos, therapy dog and unicorn visits, and a special build-a-bear workshop.

The wards also came alive with visits from our friends Bluey and Bingo, Humphrey B Bear, Hudsons Circus, Kenny and Belinda Koala, and Saoirse Harding.

From hospital to Hollywood

The end of the week saw 25 patients and their families trade their hospital rooms for a world of rollercoasters, exciting shows, and their favourite Warner Bros. characters at our Children’s Hospital Foundation family experience.

More than just a fun day out, patients and families got a well-needed break to bond, laugh, and make memories beyond the hospital environment.

For three-year-old Lachlan Reed and his family, the day was especially meaningful.

Diagnosed at birth with a chronic kidney condition, Lachlan, along with his parents and two older sisters moved from Toowoomba to Brisbane last year for ongoing treatment and preparation for his upcoming kidney transplant.

For the Reed family, the trip to Movie World offered a break from medical routines and day-to-day life in the hospital.

“It’s an amazing experience for our family. We don’t have to think about anything medical – we can just be a normal and happy family.”

– Rebecca Reed, Lachlan’s Mum

Healing through joyful experiences

Events like these are central to the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s approach to care.

Healing is about more than medical treatment – it’s about nurturing emotional well-being through joy and giving space for kids, to just be kids.

Children’s Hospital Foundation is committed to going beyond traditional care, fostering friendships and happiness that are vital for both children and their families.

By providing these joyful moments, we can nurture social connection, and empowerment and provide safe spaces for moments of happiness for kids and their families in hospital.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this week special. Your support allows us to continue creating these magical experiences and advocating for innovative treatments to ensure every child has every chance to thrive.
