With just over six weeks to go until we celebrate Queensland Children’s Hospital’s 10th birthday in November, we’re shining a light on our amazing volunteers who make a real difference in the lives of sick children and their families every day.

Donna is one of those incredible people. For over five years, Donna has been spreading joy and comfort to young patients and their families – whether she’s giving cuddles to little ones, calming nerves in the operating theatre or helping parents navigate their new hospital environment with inpatient orientation sessions.

We sat down with Donna to find out what drives her and why she loves being part of the Children’s Hospital Foundation family.

Why did you start volunteering with the Children’s Hospital Foundation?

“I wanted to bring a bit of joy and relief to kids and their families during tough times. I’ve always loved working with children, so volunteering at the hospital with the Foundation felt like the perfect fit.”

What does a typical shift look like for you?

“It really varies! On some days, I’m helping parents navigate the hospital through the inpatient orientation program, explaining how things work and where to find support.

“Other days I’m in the operating theatre holding bay, chatting with families to help calm their nerves before surgery, or working as a Cuddle Carer – where I get to comfort little ones while their parents take a break.”

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering?

“It’s the feeling of knowing I’ve made a difference – no matter how small. Whether it’s helping parents feel less overwhelmed or simply giving a child a comforting cuddle, I always leave my shifts feeling proud and grateful to be a part of their journey.”

How do you think your support impacts families?

“Families are always so appreciative. It’s the little things, like helping them feel less lost in a big hospital or offering a big of peace during a stressful day. Knowing they have someone by their side can make all the difference.”

Donna and volunteers like her are the heart of our hospital community and a reminder of how small acts of kindness can make a world of difference to families facing difficult times.

As we approach the Queensland Children’s Hospital’s 10th birthday, we celebrate our volunteers, who have committed 246,000 hours to delivering direct impact for sick children and young people since the hospital first opened in 2014.
